Paying Attention

I just returned from Mass, and I have to admit, I was a bit distracted during parts of today’s liturgy—whether it was because of a poor night’s sleep, the forecasted snowstorm set to arrive tonight, or because the opening hymn brought to mind some worries and concerns held deep in my heart, I’m not sure. Regardless of the source of the distraction, I know that my presence at the liturgy was not as focused as I would have liked it to have been. As I pray over that reality and offer God my apologies in this moment here and now, I feel like God is gently reminding me of something quite important: your presence might have been less-than-complete today, but fear not…Mine wasn’t.

How easy it is to fall into a routine of religion or ritual, missing the real significance of what is happening around and within us. Celebration of the Eucharist is nothing to take for granted—how many Christians around the world aren’t free to practice their faith, much less receive communion? And how blessed are we to have the opportunity to profess our faith, to receive Eucharist, and to be sent forth as disciples into a world that so badly needs Christ-bearers?

God needs us—he needs our hands and voices to bear him to others, our eyes and ears to recognize his presence among us. Only when we recognize the need can we accept the invitation…and only when we accept the invitation can we understand that our true vocation lies in saying “yes.” To the God who gives us himself: yes. To the God who calls us to be his hands and heart here on earth: yes. To the God who invites us to give our hearts to him: yes!

May all our answers to God this day be “yes.”
